Helping Teens Say No When my friend, Amy Alfred, recently sent an invitation to a new program she was hosting on learning to say â€Å"No† and setting boundaries, I thought it was the perfect topic for others to read about and share with their high school and college-bound children. Saying YES when you mean YES, and NO when you mean NO does not come naturally to everyone and can be a hard skill to acquire. It is especially important for students who are making the huge transition going off to college. Learning to say â€Å"No† is really being able to set appropriate boundaries, which are key in so many issues of college life like dating, academics, dealing with roommates, and friendships. What are Boundaries? A boundary is something that indicates or fixes a limit, and setting one provides a safe space between you and the world, a kind of protective shell or personal property line. Setting boundaries may not be as easy for some as it is is for others. Doing so brings attention to oneself, and many people are not comfortable being noticed in that way. Let’s take the example of Mandy, who finds herself in a small group to work on a chemistry project. She feels frustrated after each meeting because none of the other students seem interested in taking on the work, and she consistently volunteers to do it. How about the case of Steve, who finds that his loud and messy roommate is driving him crazy? Then there is Carlos, who is asked to take on more and more shifts at the student bookstore, when he is struggling to finish his class work. Another student, Surya, is asked by a close friend to tell her what was on a recent test. And finally, there is Gillian, who feels a boy she is dating is pushing her to have sex with him when she isnt sure she is ready. These are all real scenarios that happen on college campuses daily, and without the tools to say NO appropriately, students are left feeling anxious, irritated, afraid, or angry. Helping Students Set Boundaries So let’s embark on a bit of coaching with these students, and see how we can help. For Mandy, it will be necessary for her to sit back and not volunteer so quickly. She could also let the group know that she really wants the work to be more collaborative in nature. Instead of picking up all of his roommate’s clothes, trash, and books for him, Steve could calmly let his roommate know he doesn’t appreciate living in a pigsty, and would really like him to clean up his stuff. Carlos can thank his manager for trusting him to work more, but can let him know that he can only do the 15 hours that they contracted for due to his studies. Suryacan let her friend know she is uncomfortable giving out test information, since it wouldn’t be fair to the rest of the class. Gillian can discuss her feelings with her date, and let him know that she wants to take her time in the relationship in order to see how things develop and that she doesn’t want him to push her too quickly to be intimate with him. These statements should make us sit up a little straighter and examine how we contribute to having boundaries that make us feel safe, or having those that make us feel uncomfortable. A set of principles, ethics govern the way people behave with others. Philanthropy, on the other hand is the desire to invest in others happiness and well-being. Globalization has taken the economic world by storm and it has influenced almost every sector of business. The most important aspect of globalization however, is competition. This shall be discussed broadly in the later sections. Comparing and contrasting ethical and philanthropic responsibility Ethical responsibility refers to the morally correct path that people choose to walk on throughout their lives. In the business sector especially, ethical responsibility holds a vital importance. This ethical responsibility in business in popularly termed as business ethics or BE. It emerged after the 1980s and it has since been considered the most important aspect of modern organizations. Business ethics can be defined as the principles or values adhered to by companies. It is concerned with the businesss correctness or equality, actions and behaviors displayed by manager and employee, and the policies undertaken in a commercial framework. Business owners are ethically responsible to the people who rely on them to do the correct thing, be it small or big business. However, several factors test businesses to maintain the ethical standards. In times of financial stress, companies and its employees face the difficulty whether to put ethics at stake for the sake of profit or whether abide strongly by the ethics. When a company decides to cut on staff capacity and fires an employee without prior notice is an example of this. A company has the responsibility to be honest with not only its customers but also its employees. The employees have all the right to be informed about any decision taken by the company. When an employee is sacked without prior notice, it breaks the very foundation of ethical responsibility. Philanthropic responsibility on the other hand, although comes under the umbrella of ethical responsibility, is a separate entity. It is amongst the corporate social responsibilities (CSR) that companies maintain. Unlike ethical, philanthropic responsibility is not compelling to organizations. Businesses do not have to be answerable to anyone for not fulfilling this responsibility. However, businesses do have the opportunity to contribute to the society and environment as a whole by fulfilling its philanthropic responsibilities. These could include, expending money in organizing blood donation camps for the unfortunate, encouraging use of recyclable materials by organizing events and seminars and so on. One good example of philanthropic responsibility could be the involvement of a company in a charitable function that provides shelters to the homeless. The company arranges for the entire event and invites the local community to engage in this noble activity. In this way, the company gives an opportunity to the local people to be a part of it. Strategic philanthropy could also be applied here if the company decides to impose its logo or brand name in the keys or roofs of the buildings given to the needy. Increase in competition presented the unemployed class with the chance to select the ideal company and companies endeavored to move ahead in the ladder by hiring competent personnel. The cutthroat competition shunned the doors for small businesses not only in the global but local market as well. Another negative aspect is the unfair advantage of big brands over the market. Competition in fact, has reached a level that transcends political boundary. Multinational companies now possess the power to influence even political decisions. This has led to the shutting down of many smaller firms. Conglomerations are also a result of competition arising from globalization. Conglomerations are a result of unequal competition. When smaller firms fail to compete with big brands, they are left with the choice to either sell their company and leave with a paycheck or shut it down. Customers are also troubled by the competition, as they find it difficult to choose between the best product and service. In addition, they are sometimes fooled by companies into buying services that are of no value to them. Here, the companies break the ethical code of conduct in order to stay in the competition. It thus is visible that competition makes companies go against the moral rules and forget their ethical responsibility as well. On these chinapas Aztecs grew corn, beans, chili peppers, squash, tomatoes, and tobacco. Tenochtitlan (the capital city) was covered in giant religious statues in order to pay their respects to the gods. In the Aztec religion numerous gods controlled an Aztecs daily life. For their sacrifices the priest would lay the man or woman over a convex (rounded) stone, then he would take a sharp knife and cut the victims heart out. They did this because they believed that good gods could prevent bad gods from doing evil things and they also believed that good gods got their strength from human blood and hearts so they had sacrifices in order to keep their gods strong. This distinction is important because, as will be shown later, Pulp Fiction's plot leaves out some aspects of the story, and leaves us to imply or simply guess at several loose ends in the story as a whole1. 2.2 Chronology The plot of Pulp Fiction is not linear; it does not follow the chronological order of events. Rather, the story presented to the audience consists of three distinct - and very much interwoven - plot lines. The three plot lines are presented to us in 'acts' or 'chapters' mixed together, complete with chapter titles: "Vincent Vega and Marsellus Wallace's Wife", "The Gold Watch" and "The Bonnie Situation". Several elements are consistent in all of the sub-plots; for instance, Vincent Vega and the figure of gangster boss Marsellus Wallace (or at least his influence) are present throughout the film. Overall, the effect of the unusual structuring seems similar to browsing a pulp novel one already knows, reading the 'good bits' for amusement and skipping the rest - which might be the very intention of the film maker. Not only are there numerous references to pulp films and books, but we also see Vincent Vega reading a pulp novel in the film. Certainly, the film has been designed to be a success, and its title may be seen as a referral to the genre of "pulp novels" as well as a self-description. 2.3 Circularity Like many classical films, Pulp Fiction has a noticeable circularity to it. Todorov's explanation of the typical linear plot2 (plenitude, where everything is satisfactory, peaceful, calm, or at least recognizably normal - plenitude disturbed by some threatening power or force - action of a force directed against disturbing force - restoration of plenitude) is not really circular, for although the final point resembles the beginning in its stability, they are not really the same. The circularity found in Pulp Fiction - the film ends with a continuation of its very first scene - is purely structural, while the story itself has hardly any noticeably circular elements: Most of the strands of the story end with the main characters getting killed or leaving town. The film keeps referring back to itself, presenting chains of causes-and-effects in a jumbled, non-temporal and seemingly illogical order. With the exception of very few continuity mistakes, though, the plot is based on a logicall y consistent story. Tarantino's possible reasons for having changed the order of events will have to be discussed later. 2.4 Violence in Pulp Fiction: Plot Structure and Narrative Style Pulp Fiction's plot deliberately leaves out certain aspects of the story (as a whole), so that we are left guessing at parts of it. The plot's nonchronological construction also disrupts many of the story's otherwise plausible cause-and-effect chains, and places the film's closing scene somewhere in the middle of the narrative.
